The Great Depression hits home

October 1, 1931. Safety deposit box renters wait anxiously outside the Central Bank & Trust Company to access their boxes the first day the bank opened to depositors after the bank failed on to open 2 days earlier due to a lack of funds.

The building is now home to Hilton’s Home 2 Suites but the plaques bearing “CTC” on the facade hint at it’s previous life as one of many banks that failed before the FDIC insured bank deposits.
